Operations Scheme:

The operating scheme includes both heavy switching as well as various road trains, including locals, manifest, and unit trains. The Houston Terminal area includes the major industry yard known as Chaney Yard which receives cars from Englewood Yard and builds switch jobs that serve various industrial areas in the Houston Commercial Zone. The primary jobs are the Starrett Street Job and the Studemont Street Job which include a wide variety of prototype industries. The Chaney Switch Job also switches a number of industries in the immediate Chaney Yard area. The Chaney Job also makes up one local that serves industries on the Hearne Sub.

The Hearne Sub represents the Houston to Dallas line, formerly known for its’ Sunbeam and Hustler Passenger Trains, but by the 1970s a freight only line. Towns along the line include Hockley, Hempstead, and Navasota where the Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific cross and interchange cars with the Southern Pacific. The primary SP local, known as the Sciba Local operates as a turn between Houston and Navasota and returns to Houston Chaney Yard. There is also a Santa Fe Local that switches and interchanges cars at Navasota. Numerous manifest and unit trains also operate over the line, including trains that leave the Hearne Sub south of town and head down the DALSA (Dallas-San Antonio Cutoff) for West Coast destinations.
