Layout Description:

The Kansas City Union Terminal Railroad, the KCUT, is layout designed to model passenger operations at Kansas City Union Station (KCUS) in the 1950’s. The layout has just started having scenery added. The layout’s focus is on the switching that took place in Kansas City in the 1950’s with an emphasis on passenger operations around the station, REA Building, Post Office and the South Coach Yard. There is also an adjacent unionized engine facility that is shared by all of the different railroads coming into KCUS.

The layout also has a six-track freight yard used to classify long freight trains and local West Bottoms locals. The yard represents the KCT freight yard. And while the primary railroad is ATSF the yard is not limited to just the Santa Fe. KCT freight yard also works in conjunction with the KC Packing House (KCPH). KCPH receives stock cars and meat reefers from the yard and processes them thru KCPH. This is a cooperative function between the KCPH operator and the KCT Yardmaster.

The final area on the layout is the West Bottoms Industrial Area. This area features a large number of freight houses, warehouses and other industries typical of the KC West Bottoms area. The area is switched by a local operator who takes cars to and from the KCT Freight Yard.

Crew:
  • KCUS Station Master: Coordinates all passenger trains going into KCUS
  • KCUS West End Switcher: Handles the cars in the REA tracks
  • KCUS East End Switcher: Handles the cars in the PO and South Coach Yard
  • KCT Freight Yardmaster: Handles all the freight trains including the KCPH stock train, KCPH meat reefer, ATSF thru freights and West Bottoms locals
  • West Bottoms Switcher
  • Hostler/KCPH Operator: Works with superintendent to bring up trains from staging and also work with KCUS East End Switcher to bring passenger cars from the ATSF Coach Yard. Also switches KCPH in coordination/cooperation with KCT Yardmaster

Layout Features:
  • Local KC West Bottoms type industrial switching
  • KCUT passenger switching operations
  • KCT Freight Yard switching
  • Utilizes RailOp for car forwarding as well as some tabs on top for KCPH switching
  • Uses NCE DCC with corded throttles
  • Operations typically include the following in a 3-hour session:
    • 10 passenger trains
    • 5 West Bottoms locals
    • 5 ASTF thru freights
    • 1 stock train for KCPH
    • 1 meat reefer train for KCPH
    • 1 milk train to KCUS to have milk cars handled in WB’s Dairy
